Connecting To Computer Worlds
I believe in authenticity. I believe it’s one of the preconditions for a more harmonious world. Many computer technological applications are being very well-made functionally. Especially computer generated realities, like animation, robots, (serious) games, often look very realistic. But do they mean anything to us? Do we feel touched by them? Do we connect to them? Do we empathize with them? Do we at all understand them? Or do they still feel distant to us? Do they feel disconnected from us?
Mastering Time - article
"Time is an invisible flow that streams through us. Embrace it, open yourself to it, and it will be part of you." - Sandra Hooghwinkel
I am often surprised about the difficulty many people seem to have with being in time. I myself am hardly ever late and still never feel hurried. I have a playful and powerful relationship with Time and I wondered what it is that I do or experience that makes the difference. This article is the result of my pondering about the lessons I've learned to 'Master Time'.
How to Make Human Animation More Alive - final paper CMA Program
Nowadays, modern computer techniques make a lot more possible in animation than before. But even though nature, backgrounds, lighting and environments often look very realistic, the characters often don’t, especially not in the way they move. The movements regularly seem mechanical and disconnected, fragmented and lacking synthesis.
I believe it is movement that makes characters in animation films ‘alive’ as well as believable – or not. In this research I analyze and describe in LMA terms what I think is lacking in modern character animation that will make the characters more alive and credible, both functionally and expressively.
